We pulled up to the sushi restaurant I had planned for dinner but not making you aware earlier. You said that you didn’t like sushi (good start). So instead, we drove to Hamilton where I parked in an obscure lot off of John Street - praying we would find a hole in the wall restaurant somewhere.
As we walked down the street, we found a tiny restaurant that would seat a maximum 30 people. It was called Incognito. As we looked at the menu from outside we saw a table of 6 waving at us to come in. They were the only table in the restaurant, but we decided to go in anyways.
We were greeted by a gentle man who served us red wine.
You ordered the ravioli.
I ordered the steak.
Both were delicious.
We critiqued the abstract art on the wall (as wannabe art snobs would).
Conversation was easy with you. You made it fun and interesting.
It was exciting getting to know you.
As I drove you home, heart pounding and my nerves getting the best of me, we hugged and wished each other a good night.
This was the start of our relationship.
As a year passed, we made plans to eat out at Incognito around the same time we had our first date. We decided we would call this our “yearly check-up” going forward and that every year we would revisit this restaurant and relive our first date, while dreaming of the future together.
As that time of year comes around for our yearly check-up again, I find out that our restaurant has closed up shop.
Although I’m saddened, it’s okay. Because not only did Incognito give us a taste of marvellous food and amazing hospitality in a dimly lit, warm and cozy environment…
…It gave me you.
Thank you for the memories Incognito,
(and future ones too)
