Roman Breakfast, Layered. This was breakfast at Ristorcaffè Vecchia Roma dal 1905, a traditional Roman bar where the morning begins with ritual regularity. On the right, a coda di aragosta (lobster tail pastry) is filled with pistachio cream—its fluted shell crisps into fine shards, contrasting with the nutty, soft interior. On the left, not a classic sfogliatella, but a fagottino di sfoglia alla crema: a triangular puff pastry, oven-split at the seam, its centre filled with custard cream. Both rest on golden foil, a subtle nod to the elegance of even humble Roman fare. The cappuccino is well-executed: dense microfoam, a clean crema ring, and no visible curdling—signs of fresh milk, proper temperature, and good emulsification. Its pale body indicates a milk-forward pour, in line with the Roman preference for a gentle, smooth start to the day.
