3.5/5 for Brasserie Capri. This Sud-Ouest bar is famous for one thing: La Patte de Cochon, or pig knuckle. It's an old-timey traditional Quebecois dish that can rarely be found these days, and even Anthony Bourdain came to try it on his show The Layover.
The location itself is very much a bar, however it wasn't as divey as what I was expecting. In fact, the whole atmosphere of the place is a lot of fun. (It probably helped that we happened to drop in on a Habs game night.) The space is quite huge, a maze of various rooms, each filled with tables and loud patrons. There is a large bar area in the middle and plenty of busy servers rushing around. The decor is what you would expect - very sports memorabilia heavy. Be prepared to brush up on your French because the menus are in French and everyone will speak to you in French as well.

My group of five grabbed a table in the first room, and I noted the festive addition of paper Christmas place mats. There was also a basket of complimentary popcorn on every table, which we quickly devoured. Let it be known that this popcorn is by far THE BEST popcorn that I have eaten in Montreal to date! It reminded me very closely of my most favourite popcorn in the world; at the Princess Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta. I can't tell you exactly what it is - maybe the wonderfully confident buttery and salty mix on every single kernal, but this popcorn was exceptionally excellent.

Since I'm not a beer drinker (the beverage of choice in this type of joint) I flipped to the cocktail section of the menu and was happy to find my favourite, an Amaretto Sour ($6.25). This was a perfectly good version of one of my favourites. Super sweet with a bit of a sour twist. The sugared glass rim was exactly as it should be and I loved the almondy liquor that makes up most of the drink.

When it came to what to order, there wasn't much question. It was going to be the Patte de Cochon (With sauerkraut and potatoes - $13.95). The potatoes were available as french fries, boiled or mashed. I chose boiled to maintain the authenticity of the dish as much as possible. This meal was a monster! Not only were the sauerkraut and potatoes absolutely heaping, but where does one even begin with a chunk of pork like this?? The meat was incredibly tender, deliciously flavourful from the spices that it was cooked in, and it melted in my mouth. The goal was to dig in and consume as much of it as possible! The meat was also obviously very fatty, making this something that you certainly will not want to eat often. I tried to avoid as much of the fat and skin as possible, but even so, the dish was extremely heavy. The mountainous pile of sauerkraut was perfectly pickled, but the potatoes were quite bland. There really wasn't anything to them and adding salt didn't help a whole lot. My overall verdict on the dish is that this Quebecois classic is most definitely worth a try at least once. I'm not too sure if I would order it again and again though.

I'm curious about their Spaghetti Capri with smoked meat, which sounds like something else that they might be known for. They also serve breakfast, which always interests me. The prices are super low and the vibe of the place is a ton of fun. If you're looking for an authentic Quebecois brasserie experience, this is the place!
