This is the type of Indian restaurant my parents would take our family to growing up on the southside of the city. Not a very polished setting but the cook is a master of her craft. My friend and I came here for a weekday lunch so it was empty, didn't seem like she was expecting anyone at the time. Interior could use a bit of love. There was no menu, we just ordered old country style. Told her what we were feeling and she made it happen. The curry portions were pretty nice compared to other restaurants, naans were near perfect. Price was reasonable too. The food was downright delicious and the service was fantastic. I also left something of value here and I got it back safely so shoutout to the owner for being a good human.

I’ve been here a few times, usually for my parents’ birthdays as they love Indian food but they’re introverts who prefer dining in quiet peace. The food is customized to your liking and spice preference, and Ancila makes a variety of both vegetarian and meat dishes. She took into account that we are Sri Lankan and changed the flavours to suit our tastes. I always get the paneer takatak, but I’ve also tried the shahi paneer and paneer makhani and everything is delicious. The naan sizes are too small in my opinion so it’s better to get rice with your curry. Prepare for a longer wait (30-40 mins) as it’s only Ancila cooking in the kitchen, I believe. It’s worth the wait - the food is so rich and flavourful but I never feel heavy or sick after eating. Also always call before going — sometimes they’re closed or not accepting tables even if they’re open according to google. I found Ancila's Indian Cuisine through a Google search. I was looking for an Indian restaurant that was open for sit down service near the hotel my friend was staying at, and it was the first one I found. I called and made a reservation for the patio, and hoped for the best. When I got there, there was one table set up on the patio. I was a little worried, but okay, I'm game. My friend and I were seated and Ancila came out to explain the ordering process. There's no menu, but you get a choice of different proteins and she suggested sides. She asked what spice level we were good with. I am good with a pretty good spice level, but people define spicy differently, so we went with 4-6 out of 10. And then we sat back to wait. MY GOD. Starting with pakora which was delicious, it just kept getting better and better. Saffron rice, paneer, beef and chicken curries in amazing sauces with a lovely heat. I could have taken a bit more heat, but they gauged it well. I am hoping they weren't giggling at our Canadian palates. :) Butter naan and garlic naan rounded the meal out. I couldn't have asked for a better meal. Service was amazing. I felt like we were guests at their home table and they just wanted to please us. I would go again and again. It's a little tiny bit dingy, but go for the food. Go. They deserve every one of those 5 stars.
