Wayside is this rare unique amalgamation of great beer, excellent coffee, community comics and art. Omar is a true believer with a good soul and wicked mind for out of this world cocktails. He has curated a truly impressive stock of trade paperbacks and collectibles, and will never let you down when you need advice on anything. This shop also consistently finds ways to support local artists and good causes.
There was a verrry small part of me that didn't want to write this review because Wayside is the kind of perfect and it's somewhere don't want spoilt! Wayside Comics & Cocktails has become one of my favourite places on this planet. But even from an objective perspective, Omar has created a really beautiful space for both comic and non-comic lovers. Welcoming, relaxed, spacious and full of comics. Omar is the most hospitable host you could ever ask for, - knowledgeable about all things comics, both mainstream and indie, great at recommending and also a mean bartender and barista. He's also just a great human being. I usually hang out once a week just to work at wayside. My breaks are more often than they should be and I always end up seeing (and buying) something new each time I visit. You can often have really good conversation with locals in Newmarket as well as visitors form out of town. There will often be a good film or show in the background (requests are taken) as well as having game nights, drawing nights, regular discount events and a place for showcasing artists at least once a month. You might even catch them shooting their weekly youtube show 'By The Wayside'. There's even food to order from next doors delicious Retrofit Sandwich Co. I honestly think the one thing that could improve this place is a couple of beds that you can sleep in. It might not have every comic book in the world but Omar will definitely go out of his way to get order in what you are looking for. Having just moved to Toronto in the last year, finding this gem was truly the icing on the cake. I recommend anyone and everyone to go to Wayside even if it's for a drink (I recommend the Waysider or a Spiked Hot Chocolate) and of course, for a comic book. Support local business!!
