I think the identity of this restaurant can be summed up in one word: "confused". Very boldly it touts itself as Malaysian, Indonesian, and Thai food -- which I didn't think to be weird at first, because if you went to somewhere like Jalan Alor in MY, you'd see those cuisines together because those populations all live so nearby. From the front of the door, a sign tells you to expect a truly tropical southeast asian experience. But the dining experience really falls flat. Let me tell you: if you are not at all well-versed in South East Asian Food, Tropika is /fine/. The food is okay. But it's just, I wouldn't call that a Southeast Asian experience. In the first bit, no signature beverage from any of the three cultures mentioned in their signage were present -- no teh, nor bandung, nor thai milk tea, and the staff didn't know what it was either. Their star drink is a Lychee and Coconut Milk cocktail, which has no ties to anything, and if you look it up, its roots come from the American who invented the Pina Colada. So I truly do not know why. Secondly, I don't think they know what the flavors are of the dishes they were aiming to make. I ordered an Assam Ayam, chicken in Assam sauce -- it's supposed to be fragrant, savory, sour, sweet, and spicy all in one, with strong presence of coriander. What you get instead is watery boiled chicken in slightly sour tomato broth with some lemongrass and coconut milk. Did it taste bad? No. But what was this... It was like, confused if it was supposed to be Filipino Sinigang or Tom Yum without kefir leaves. It had tomatoes like Assam sauce, but it's so far from what it's supposed to taste like. And it's so disappointing because assam sauce dishes is a favorite of mine. Roti Canai was fluffy and delicious; the curry sauce was only pleasant and not strong. Nasi goreng too was decently good, and Pisang goreng also were fine, though served more like a wicked oreo (in that it is dunked in pancake batter and deepfried) ala mode. I think to summarize my thoughts and feelings of eating here, it's an okay place to go if you dislike the strong flavors of southeast asian cuisine, but want to partake in something new anyway. However it is a bad representation of southeast asian food. It's as if though it feels too shy to really introduce what southeast asian flavors should be. Maybe it is too scared to offend the uninitiated. Anyway, lackluster experience. I regret going here. Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: CA$30–40 Food: 2 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4 Recommended dishes: Roti Canai, Deep Fried Bannana
