A restaurant with a long history, La Tavernetta del Lupo maintains a traditional cuisine, with some (small) concessions to modernity. Unfortunately, the location is a bit tired, while the service lacks a bit of warmth. The kitchen, fortunately, makes up for this slightly humble atmosphere, confirming its good levels. The chef's welcome, a sort of small caprese with scamorza instead of mozzarella and oregano instead of basil, is pleasant even if a little disconnected from any context. It luckily goes better with appetizers. The off-menu marinated Piedmontese beef millefeuille is tasty and well balanced by the crunchy vegetables, even if the brick pasta chip appears pleonastic. Even better is the parmesan flan, with melted young cheese and parmesan chips. Another off-menu main course is a "tapilla" of grilled Iberian pork, accompanied by excellent rolls of golden radicchio and bacon sautéed in traditional vinegar. From the menu, instead, choose an (appreciable) Irish Angus ribeye with grilled vegetables. Before the desserts (two sorbets, one with pink grapefruit, the other with late Ciaculli mandarin), we finish tasting a classic among the Sagrantini: a 2018 Arnaldo Caprai reserve (Valdimaggio), hints of cherry, sweet spices and (for who is good) graphite, while the palate is pampered by very elegant tannins. The bill holds no surprises and, on a note of merit, it can also be honored with American Express. The judgment is limited to 3 out of 5 stars, despite the good level of the cuisine and an appreciable wine list.
