Stay Details: Dates of stay: September 2024 Room type: Family unit with 2 bedrooms, each with an en-suite, plus a lounge, dining area, kitchen nook, and patio. Purpose of stay: Vacation, primarily to experience the renowned bass fishing advertised on the website. First Impressions: Upon arrival, the landscape was stunning, with two tranquil dams creating a peaceful setting. However, things took a turn. Due to snow, we only arrived after 5 p.m. The guard handed us our keys, mentioning that reception was closed, which felt impersonal. The room itself was spacious and beautiful, but we faced immediate challenges—while lights and the TV worked, no other appliances did. After some confusion and minimal help from the guard, I found out there was a power outage due to snow, but no emergency contact was provided. After some persistence, someone eventually switched on a generator so we could warm our food and enjoy a hot beverage. Room and Amenities: The unit was spacious and well-maintained, with good beds and ample cupboard space. However, there were maintenance issues—one aircon didn’t work, several power outlets were loose, and most USB ports were unusable. Cleanliness was excellent, and the provided fireplace, complete with wood and firelighters, was a welcome feature. Wi-Fi was poor and unstable, and the kitchen nook offered complimentary tea, coffee, and sugar. The daily cleaning staff did an excellent job. Facilities: We attempted to use the pool on the last day, but the water was too cold, and the pool cleaner was stuck in one position, leaving dirt and bugs in the water. The pool’s depth could be dangerous for unsupervised children. Service and Staff: I primarily interacted with the cleaning staff, who were friendly and thorough. Unfortunately, beyond the initial check-in hiccup and lack of communication during the power outage, I had no further interaction with management or other staff. Location: The location was convenient, right across from the Piggly Wiggly complex, which offers bespoke shopping, restaurants, and a bakery. However, none of the eateries were certified halal. Value for Money: Despite some disappointments, I found the accommodation to be good value for money. Areas for Improvement: Better maintenance of units (fix aircon, power outlets, USB ports). Improved communication with guests, especially during emergencies like power outages. Update the website to reflect the true state of the fishing facilities. Complaint: The primary reason for booking was the bass fishing advertised on the website. Over three days of dedicated fishing, we found no evidence of bass in the dam, which was instead full of carp. Despite the dam being well-maintained and clear, it was evident that bass had either not been stocked or were removed. I spoke to the ground staff, and they confirmed that most of the catches were carp. As an avid bass fisherman, I was deeply disappointed, especially as I wanted my children to experience this as well. St Ives should update its website to avoid misleading guests about the fishing experience. Final Thoughts and Recommendation: While St Ives is a beautiful and tranquil spot, I would recommend it only for a short stay or as a stopover for relaxation, not for bass fishing. The venue is ideal for R&R but fails to deliver on its fishing promises. Service: 3
