Absolutely the best fresh vetkoek in Pretoria. Always fresh and tasty take aways. A lovely convenient store,, open until 8 at night. Friendly staff. Good for a quick bite to grab and eat. St. Georges Cafe & Bakery in Lynnwood was recommended to me to be the best fish and chips in Pretoria so I went there last night with the expectation that I would receive a meal that would satisfy both my wife and myself. Unfortunately, We had the extreme misfortune of buying extremely expensive (R95) take away fish and chips only to find it thoroughly disappointing. This simple dish should be a simple pleasure but was not at all. The fish was clearly cooked before and reheated, but on opening it to eat it it was clear that it was thoroughly undercooked and ice cold inside. Touching it I found the texture soft and mooshy, like old de-composed fish – almost like a prawn’s guts when you pull its head off. The certainty of food poisoning made me refuse to eat it. The batter, instead of being light and crispy, was heavy and greasy and old, almost like thick mouldy bread, making it completely un-edible. I had to throw the fish in the rubbish where it belonged. The chips were equally disappointing. They were undercooked and lacked the golden crispness that one would expect from a decent chip. Instead, they were soggy and bland, with no seasoning to speak of and wreaked of old oil. To add insult to injury, the price of the meal was exorbitant. One expects to pay a premium for quality, but in this case, the quality was sorely lacking. It felt like a slap in the face to be charged such a high price for a meal that was, quite frankly, subpar and disappointing. I mean, how difficult is it really to cook fish and chips properly? The overall experience at St. Georges Cafe & Bakery was a letdown. I went in with high expectations, only to be met with terrible in-edible food and high prices. I would not recommend the fish and chips at this place to anyone. I will certainly never ever go back there again. I am sure there are far better options available elsewhere that offer both value for money and a satisfying meal. Be warned – you will get sick if you eat here!!
