Stay away from Saint Laurent In a late summer afternoon, while enjoying the nice warm weather, strolling down the ally way in Brussels Central area, we were flanked by multiple hard selling pan-handlers type street side cafe, all of them try to pull us into their establishment with pictorial filled menu in multiple languages, well, that should have been the alarm that we needed to adhere to, however, we have had many great experiences with other street side cafe in our travel in other parts of the world, and we were getting a bit hungry as its was near dinner hours. So we gave in, we sat down at the Saint Laurent . They made sure we sat at the most outer table by the street, so they can use us to parade to other passerby tourists. We were served with cheap house wine and it gave me a headache, and some sort of beer that tasted like some home brew that had gone bad. We kept our thoughts to ourselves, but as minutes gone by, no food, no sight of our starter dish. So we broke silence and asked the waiters that were busying stalking other tourists walking by. Eventually we were able to get someone's attention, he said 'yes, I will bring you some garlic bread soon'. We thought that was part of the dinner package, well, we thought wrong. The few pieces of staled bread sprinkled with some tomato sauce, garlic powder and quickly heated in the speed-oven, and some of the slices were still cold when we got it. Next the starter dish, the shrimp scampi was like chewing on shoe leather, and the salad under the smoked salmon was still soaked in water. Oh, please wait for the main course. Lastly, the main course; mixed fish dish was like the size of a starter, we would have done much better with frozen fish fillet, and the Paella dish was missing many main ingredient like shrimp, chorizo, clams,...etc. I guess we were lucky that we got a handful of mussel and two calamari rings.Well, we know this is supposed to be cafe style food and should not expect as much as from a gourmet restaurant, but we were surprised with the 4 euro charge for the horrific garlic bread. And the store owner / manager played the 'I don't speak English' game, funny things is that he totally understood our English when he took our order, aye!? Needless to say, we did not bother with the so called 'desert, included'. Lesson learned... never, never, never, let your guard down when you are in Brussels, to allow these sweet talking bandits ruining your wonderfully planned holiday with a bad experience! So, stay away from side ally cafe's, there is a reason that they are stuffed in the side ally, not able to make it to the main concourse, mainly because they have something to hide.I would have give this joint a negative rating if it was possible!
