On a freezing Berlin night, I found myself making a beeline to Rum Trader—a place I’d heard whispers about. It was late, the kind of late when you know you’re either heading for an adventure or heading home. I rang the bell, and sure enough, a guy straight out of Mad Men opens the door. “We’re full tonight,” he says. “I can recommend another spot.” My wife and I exchanged a look, and I said, “I’m here for your rum Old Fashioned. I’ll stand outside in the cold if I have to.” He paused, then led us to a tiny corner inside. He served up that beautiful Old Fashioned, complete with an ashtray. If you’ve got asthma or an issue with smoke, fair warning—it’s part of the vibe here. The atmosphere is pure old-school—vintage suits, dresses, the whole nine yards. I felt a little out of place in my jeans, but the charm of the place pulled me in. Even the crocodile-skin water jug had a certain elegance to it.
