Tout était parfait ! De la réservation au repas. Tout ce que l'on peut espérer d'un restaurant qui mérite son étoile. Le service très soigné nous mets à l'aise très rapidement dans ce monde culinaire. Le est d'être servi par le chef en personne sur quelque plats. Très bonne carte des vins. Hi, my name is Anita, and I never thought I’d have to write a review like this, but after what happened, I feel it’s only fair to share my experience. I live just 2 minutes away from Ratatouille Food & Wine in Haarlem. One evening, I was walking home, passing by the restaurant where a group of people, including staff members, were laughing and enjoying themselves. I just wanted to walk through, but one of the staff members stood in my way and refused to let me pass. He literally blocked my path. At first, I was confused—isn’t the street for everyone? When I tried to walk past, he actually pushed me with his elbow, forcing me into the bike lane. I was shocked, thinking, "Is this really happening? Can’t I just walk by without being treated like this?" I couldn’t believe it, so I decided to go into the restaurant to ask for the manager. To my surprise, the same man who pushed me shouted, "I am the owner!". I couldn’t believe how rude and disrespectful he was. I told him that as the owner, he should be ashamed of himself for how he treated me. If I had been walking with my husband, I doubt this would have happened. It felt like he was trying to assert some kind of power over me because I was alone and looked different. I’ve been to this place a few times before, and I can’t lie—the food is good, and the staff has always been nice. But this kind of arrogant behavior from the owner? Absolutely unacceptable. It left me thinking, if I had blonde hair and blue eyes, would I have been treated this way? Sadly, I don’t think so. It’s extremely disappointing that in 2024, we still have to deal with this kind of discrimination. I’ve lived in the Netherlands for a while now, and while it tries to present itself as a progressive country, you start to see the true colors of some people when you live here long enough. Tourists might not notice it during a short visit, but for those of us who live here, these experiences are real. My husband is Dutch and white, and when I’m with him, I’m treated well. But when I’m alone? It’s a different story. Would I go back to Ratatouille Food & Wine? Absolutely not. The way the owner treated me was enough to make me avoid the place entirely. I feel so uncomfortable now that I even walk further away just to avoid passing by the restaurant. It’s sad because I believe we should all treat each other with respect, regardless of how we look or where we come from. This is not a made-up story—do you think I’d spend my time writing such a long review if I wasn’t genuinely upset? I just want everyone to understand that respect goes both ways. Unfortunately, the owner didn’t even bother to apologize. He acted like he owned not just the restaurant but the whole street, and his friends who were there with him, of course, backed him up. I was just a woman alone, trying to walk home. As someone who has owned a bar myself, I can say that if something like this had happened in my establishment, I would have taken the person aside to discuss it calmly, not embarrassed them in front of my customers. It was incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful. If this is how they treat people, I don’t need to ever step foot in that place again. Let’s start with something simple—respect for each other.
