Seemingly rather unimpressive from the outside at first glance, Pushap is quite possibly one of the best places in Montréal for home-style Indian food. The food is extremely modest and genuinely feels like what a truck-stop diner might serve back in India. The "Thaalis" are an affordable and filling option for someone who is not too familiar with Indian cuisine. I also recommend the "chole bhature" and "sweet lassi", with a few "samosas" and a plate of "pakoras" to start. A great aspect of the service here is that the chef can make some of the dishes according to your specifications - exclude certain ingredients or add some (you may need to call ahead of time and specify your requirements for them to do this).
Besides food there is a sizable selection of sweets, which is also very good. I'd recommend the "Ras Malai" and the "Cham Cham" in particular.
The service is very good on weekdays and the odd hours during the week, but is often a bit slow when there are several visitors during holidays and on the weekends. The establishment itself is quaint and not too fancy, but the food makes up for the underwhelming ambiance. It is an easy drive to get here, its just off the main road. However one problem I see is that they only accept cash, which is a non-issue.
Overall, Pushap does a great job of capturing the essence of Indian cuisine through its simple home-style dishes, despite adhering to a strictly vegetarian selection.
Worth a visit if you are in Montreal.
