I think my rating is mostly based on the retail aspect of the store. They have a well rounded selection of food and kitchen products. I recently went in for breakfast while I was in the area. I really like the fact that you can something light like toast or a croissant with a beverage for your meal. I also like that the jam they serve is the jam they make(and sell). It was really quiet when I went so it was peaceful and not rushed. The service was polite and helpful. I'd go again.

I've been looking forward to stopping by this unique little spot in Westboro for some time now. Living in Chelsea, Quebec and working downtown, I don't often get to Westboro. Today, on the way to shop at the Westboro market with my newly wed son and daughter-in-law, we stopped in to look for a house warming gift for their new house. My son is a chef so he was interested in the selection of cheeses and mustards. My daughter-law was interested in looking at table linens as she likes the brightly coloured Provence style. From the moment we stepped through the front door, we had a staff escort following us around- not in the "how can I help you" kind of way. More in the "I think you're going to rob us" kind of way. It was off-putting but the selection was interesting and I saw a few things that I wanted to buy. My daughter-in-law wanted to stop for a tea at the cafe before we picked up the items we were going to buy. Before that, we both needed to use the washroom. The young woman working in the cafe helpfully pointed us to the back of the store. It was while my daughter-in-law was using the facilities that our store escort decided to become quite aggressive, planting herself in front of the washroom and declaring that the washrooms were for paying customers and not for us. When I pointed out that we were in fact customers who were in the process of making some purchase in her store, she became rude and sarcastic, demanding that I tell her what exactly I wanted to buy. I pointed out that she was being rude and was, through her behaviour, destroying any chance of the sale she had been about to make. She claimed she was the owner and she didn't care what I said.

I'm disappointed to have been treated so shabbily. I'm disappointed that although I found a number of items I wanted to purchase - a pretty, yellow table cloth for the table in my son and daughter-in-law's sun porch and a red and silver cutlery set that my son admired- I won't be shopping there again. Maybe it was because we were dressed casually or maybe the owners value their washroom access more than their relationship with new customers. I don't know but I can say that it was, hands down, the strangest and most unpleasant interaction I've ever had with someone working in a retail establishment.

Chez François - Plaisirs de Provence is a French bakery in the Westboro area. While walking on the streets on Richmond where Westfest is held, we passed by Chez François for their croissant. I ate a lot of croissants in Montreal, at least once a week.
The croissant here is not the best I have eaten. I find it average. At least it is the best in Ottawa. The taste of butter is subtle, and it wasn't as flaky than the ones I'm used to.

This place is not only a bakery that sells macaroons, cookies, truffles and chocolate. It is a boutique that sells homemade pies, soups, sauces, vinaigrettes as well as imported cheese, wine and pâtés. It also offers a selection of linens, candles, cookware and flatware. The concept of the whole boutique/bakery is a perfect replica of what you experience in France.
