The Sunday buffet at the Monument restaurant is an absolute must for anyone who loves quality traditional home cooking meals. There is a wide variety of starters, mains and desserts to choose from which mean you will definitely get your money's worth! All the different dishes have a lot of flavour despite being prepared in large quantities. I enjoyed the starters a lot. The "afval" as one of the mains is of the highest quality and truly tasteful!! The beef and pork is very well prepared. The pumpkin fritters is delicious. The beespotjie was delicious. The chicken fillets was really tender. Some of the desserts were really nice but there were some that I did not enjoy as much such as the milktart, caramel appletart, sago and the malva pudding. The malva and caramel appletart was a bit dry. The "souskluitjies" with cinnamon and sugar souce was very nice-loved it! The koeksisters, caramel cones, chocolate and strawberry ice-cream and chocolate mousse was also very nice!

Delicious food. Great variety of foods available in the buffet. Truly traditional 'boerekos'. Excellent service and great atmosphere. Great for Sunday family lunch!

The Monument Restaurant, named "Die Blikkantien" - translated as "The Tin/Enamel Can" - is a restaurant and function venue at the Voortrekker Monument.
As such, it is fulfilling the valuable service of entertaining in traditional/old fashioned Afrikaner food. The restaurant menu on weekdays and Saturday is basic. On Sundays a lunch buffet is served.
Situated in a sixtys/early seventies style building hugging the Monument koppie, not much can be done to improve the ambience: a dim vast dining hall during daytime visits. Outside on the verandah, it is much better. In the shade of ancient trees, one experiences a closeness to nature and a temporary escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Our breakfast was tasty and generous. Prices are reasonable. Service and plating amateurish, but friendly and competent. Like at a friend's farmhouse.
