I'm sorry to say that Laura had a really bad experience today at Moloko.
When she arrived at the restaurant she told the hostess in Russian and then in English that she had a reservation. The hostess gave me a weird smile and just acted like Laura was a moron even though Laura gave her name and said again that she had a reservation. Laura couldn’t decide if the hostess looked frustrated or annoyed, but she just pointed to a couple of tables in the restaurant and that Laura should just choose one.
When Laura’s lunch guest arrived, the hostess seemed even more annoyed. There were just the two of them in the restaurant. No sooner had Laura’s guest sat down (they hadn’t looked at the menu or anything) than the waitress came to table to ask if they were ready to order. Laura said in Russian that they needed a few minutes.
Things went downhill from there. The hostess continued to roll her eyes and smile like she thought Laura and her guest were morons or stupid foreigners. Laura asked, in Russian, if there was a problem in Russian. The waitress then quickly replied, “no no it’s just that your reservation, we had you at another table in a different room.”
Laura isn’t convinced that there was a table in another room for her and her guest because the hostess, whose job it is to seat people according to their reservations or not didn’t acknowledge any sort of reservation for Laura or seat her at a table in another room. She just pointed vaguely at a couple tables and told me to choose whichever one she wanted. Laura seems to think that the hostess was annoyed that Laura and her guest even entered her restaurant – she certainly couldn’t have been less interested if she tried.
The waitress grudgingly took the food order and barely acknowledged Laura and her guest’s presence when she finally served the food. After they were done eating, when she brought the bill Laura was using Google translate to ask whether the bill could be split 50/50. The waitress didn’t bother to wait for the question, she simply entered the full amount of the bill into the bank machine and motioned to Laura to tap her card like she was some sort of idiot who had never used a bank card before.
From beginning to end Laura said the experience at Moloko was unpleasant. The hostess was lazy (she didn’t check for a reservation and motioned for Laura to find her own table), rude (Laura said her eyerolling was so exaggerated that they could have had sound effects), and racist (never even acknowledged that Laura was trying to speak Russian). The waitress wasn’t much better, especially with the rush to get the foreigners in and out of the restaurant as quickly as possible to include rushing along the payment.
Laura really liked the restaurant the first time she went there, but she’ll never go back again after the way she and her guest were treated and she won't be recommending it to any other attachés' wives either.
