I'm fairly good at cooking, so when I treat myself to an evening at a restaurant I'm not just looking for a good meal, but a combination of things: table service that's not only excellent, but that makes me feel like I'm the only customer; I want an always original preparation of food in order to make a plate of spaghetti with tomato sauce seem like a novelty; I expect from the staff a complicity that is never gossip; I want a knowledge of the raw materials of which the dishes are made and of the preparation of the same by the waiters who have to advise me at the time of choice and explain the menu to me. Here at Macallé I didn't find this alchemy: mind you, I said "alchemy" so I am well aware that it takes an alchemist to create the philosopher's stone of catering and it's not that alchemists are found around every corner! The Macallé is a good restaurant: the dining room is elegant, the staff is courteous and the dishes are well prepared, tasty, the prices are in line with the level, but... no magic. What I mean? I arrive after having booked, also communicating the arrival time and while I announce myself to the owner, this - after a few words - answers the phone and "unloads" me to the waiter, communicating to him and to whoever was on the other end of the line, my nominative. My friends and I are seated at the first table, almost in the center of the room occupied by a baby grand piano: what an honor, I think, then I realize that the table is also the closest to the entrance and to the drafts not mitigated by the hallway placed in front of the door since the waiter (who moves with precise movements, but not with the passion he perhaps had when he was younger) thinks well of letting the most frequent customers enter the club, through a French window in front of our table, to the advantage (which one?) of the latest arrivals who are also served a welcome prosecco probably in a personalized menu, but which has not even been offered to us. The waitress who is polite and good professionalism did well, minus the elderly owner, to be admired for her commitment, but who has paternalistic attitudes, out of time: if the serving dish of risotto is at the table, after we are served a meager portion, still contains an identical quantity you don't have to ask if the customer likes a reinforcement, because you make him look hungry while you served less than the correct knowing that you already have an encore ready to ensure his gratitude! Am I mischievous? It may be, but the many reviews made show that I have frequented numerous places in order to be able to issue not judgments, but some of my evaluations. Am I biased? Yes, in the sense that I had already been to this place some time ago and I see that these gimmicks that had left me perplexed then now confirm my original impression: there is a "benevolence" towards customers who come to Macallé for the first time and courteousness towards the regulars: perhaps they should instead be more attentive to some details such as the hole I found in my napkin or to have a wine list more oriented towards the proposals of the territory because not everyone can afford Barolo and Barbaresco and being in Momo, not exactly the best-known tourist resort in the North West or even in northern Piedmont, having a Boca, a Ghemme or a Vespolina in your cellar wouldn't be a bad idea. Nor is it a bad idea to come to the Macallé: perhaps, after this review of mine, any customer will be able to make those small improvements and do the magic!
