Shockingly Offensive Racist Experience at Lulu Bar I visited Lulu Bar this past weekend with two friends, and while I’ve had odd experiences here before, this was the first time I was so deeply offended by the server and the manager. The three of us (2 being visibly darker skinned) were having a passionate yet cordial conversation about heated topics such as the current political climate, Covid, and cancel culture. While our conversation was intense, it was respectful, and we were enjoying ourselves. Our server frequently came by, even though we didn’t need much, and we were always polite and thanked her. After some time, she suddenly informed us that we were being cut off because we were “too loud” and she “heard some slurring.” This was shocking, as we were far from being obnoxious or drunk. The manager then approached us. Initially, he agreed that we were not slurring and clearly not too intoxicated, and he even brought us more drinks. However, when we tried to make a joke to ease the tension, he remained stone-faced. The server later returned to apologize but insisted she was following the rules. We politely questioned why she didn’t discuss the issue with us first, and asked if she was perhaps new to serving and not used to being around people have in depth conversations over drinks and dinner? The very young server claimed she'd been doing it for 6 years. The situation escalated when the manager returned, visibly angry and shaking out of nervousness, declaring that we had to leave because the server claimed we were rude and disrespectful. He stated he had the authority to kick us out, then hastily grabbed our glasses and handed us our bills, all while accusing us of lying to him. Other servers nearby seemed to enjoy the scene, smirking as if we were a problematic group. This entire episode felt surreal and humiliating, and I can’t help but feel that our race played a role in how we were treated. We were the only ones in the restaurant who looked like us, and it seemed we were either judged for our appearance or mistaken for being much younger than we are. I'm still in shock of how this could have possibly happened and completely disgusted by this young blonde male managers behavior. Not to mention the servers. Is this just another case of the younger generation being so sensitive? Is it racism? Never have I ever been kicked out of a bar, let alone a restaurant! I treat people with kindness, especially those who serve me, but I will not be walked over and made to feel like a villain when I have done nothing wrong. This experience was completely unprofessional and disrespectful. I hope Lulu Bar takes serious steps to address such unacceptable behavior and ensure all guests are treated with respect and dignity.
