This is the type of place that we always hope we will find. It’s a surprisingly delicious restaurant hidden in an unusual place, which we stumbled into, because it was close to our hotel and we were too tired and hungry to hunt around, check reviews or comparison shop. It’s in the town of Fumicino, which is the same town as the airport in Rome (we were staying at an airport adjacent hotel). Little did we know that this most unassuming community was hiding wonderful surprise for our taste buds. La Pecora Nero looks like a neighborhood place – inviting with a handful of tables. Our waiter was also the owner, which made it all the more wonderful as he obviously wanted to make things outstanding for his customers. My wife ordered a chicken dish whose name we can’t remember. It looked a lot like boneless skinless thighs, and although it looked plain, the chef managed to impart a flavor that absolutely exploded in our mouths. It’s truly one of my great pleasures in life when I take a bite with trepidation, expecting to be unimpressed and am then fully blown away by an amazing flavor. Best of all that was the same outcome for my lamb dish and his Roman style artichokes, which were unlike others we’ve tasted elsewhere. The artichokes were SO good, that my daughter and I ordered two more for dessert. Not to be outdone by artichokes however, the owner – who doesn’t speak a lot of English, (bus doesn’t need to) brought out three hot fresh donuts for us for dessert (his treat). Now, I’ve loved donuts my whole life, but because of age and an increasing waistline, I almost never eat them anymore. However, after one bite, both my wife and daughter were imploring me to try one – as they were - and are, the best darned donuts we’ve ever had! Then, as yet ANOTHER special treat, he brought me a small plate of Coratella, which is basically a sauteed dish of lamb liver and interiors – a Roman specialty. Most Americans would probably think it too gross to even try, but to me, it tasted like absolute heaven. The prices were exceptionally reasonable and we were so happy with this dinning experience that we will continue planning our trips so that we stay in that same airport-adjacent neighborhood in and out of Rome, just so we can eat at La Pecora Nera. For added context, if you are familiar with Rome’s famous Trattoria da Enzo al 29 (featured on Rick Steve’s), this restaurant is right there with it in my opinion. An absolute delight to which I can’t wait to return. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
