I had mixed feelings about my visit to El Mezcaleria in Vancouver, BC. The atmosphere was vibrant, and the service was good, but the portion sizes left much to be desired. For a table of six, we started with an appetizer that came with just four small tortillas. Each tortilla could be broken into about four chips, which disappeared instantly. We asked for more and received just four more tortillas, which also vanished quickly. It was puzzling, as most Mexican restaurants provide at least a basket or two of chips. The limited amount of tortillas was surprising and a bit disappointing. For my main dish, I ordered the only vegan burrito option. While it was beautifully presented and tasted fantastic, it was incredibly small. For $18, I expected to feel satisfied, but I would have needed at least two burritos to feel full. The vegan churros were splendid! I definitely recommend! Although the food was delicious, the portion sizes and value for money were underwhelming. If you’re planning to visit, I recommend ordering a bit more than you think you may want. It’s also a great spot for a date, thanks to its vibrant atmosphere and stylish presentation. Vegetarian options: Not too many vegetarian options shown on menu, they can adjust things, but less than I would hope. Same for vegan. Felt unwelcomed the moment i arrived for the reservation, immediately being told we had a time limit, then before the 2 hours point multiple servers reminded we must vacate the table 3 more times. I ordered the Parrillada De Mariscos, unfortunately everything on the plate was overcooked. The ocotpus was very chewy and hard to cut. The Shrimp was impossible to deshell by hand before it continued to overcook. All this seafood was sitting on a searing hot-griddle...why? There was no salsa morita which was listed on the menu to accompany the dish. The Tuna overcooked within 5 min of sitting on the hot-plate. This dish was extremely dissapointing. Please la Mezcaleria, teach your cooking team how to cook seafood properly, and about carry-over cooking. Maybe don't serve a bunch of seafood that can easily overcook on a searing griddle that will surely make all the protein hard and chewy? Nobody wants this burned pile of self-serve dissapointment. I wasn't even given any vessel to put shrimp shells, and i was given no plate to even place my tortillas on. Showed a major lack of thought put into everything. The drinks were fantastic. There was one server who was very warm and kind to us. Tall larger guy with tattoos who also made drinks. Very nice. The rest of the staff were offputting and cold to us.
