We arrived at Ostarie La Da Gjgjote truly by chance, in a perfect case of serendipity. We thought we would sit down and, considering the type of "Ostarie" place, given the magnificent bottles of wine displayed without affectation but in a very enjoyable way, immersed in the almost suffused light in warm tones, we were sure to start browsing the menu to understand what was on offer capacity of our stomachs, perhaps learning a few Friulian terms at the same time. Instead. Instead, an innkeeper arrives, a real innkeeper that even in a tavern today it is not a given to find, with a broad smile who asks us if it is the first time we have eaten here, and already from the question, you begin to wonder a little if not there is a sort of multi-level experience, I'm not saying an initiation. We nod that yes, it's the first time, and our host, already imagining it, begins to explain to us "how it works", and our attention is pretty much captured, while our big dog Jack sits under the table, pricking up his ears. We talk about "Ciccia", a steak expressed in the only and best possible way: on the grill, and I immediately feel like I can smell that unmistakable aroma of the few select places in Tuscany where Fiorentina is honoured, celebrated and treated like a divinity : hey, we're in Friuli, what are you talking about? The young yet ancient innkeeper, with all his experience, savoir-faire and friendliness, wanders among the tables that welcome locals, us foreigners and yet Italians and foreigners from across the border, explaining, coaxing, showing off with phlegm and with a sure and loving grip he cuts the meat that will be cooked and served, and while he does it his eyes shine, he inserts the right pauses, he gives sly glances at the customers who all seem to be at the table of friends who didn't yet know they were friends. We, who are not professional "fat eaters", worry about the approximately 2kg to be divided into four, we are astonished, almost scared. I wonder if, beyond the magnificent presentation, in Friuli you can also find cooking and that something that distinguishes Tuscanaccia Fiorentina. And without a shadow of a doubt at Ostarie La Da Gjgjote the miracle of teleportation takes place in one of the best Tuscan trattorias: where are they? Who cooked this wonder?... Friuli already amazes with the beauty of its land and the dry friendliness of the Friulians; but here, while this Scottona melts in your mouth, for real, you know that a name is just a name: here Tuscany is, if not dethroned, at least downsized by a Tuscany called Friuli. The innkeeper is stateless even if he is Friulian, but in reality it doesn't matter: he is simply the personification of the innkeeper of the past, increasingly rare, and with that quick irony of the "most cursed" Tuscans, as Curzio Malaparte would say. Wonderful staff: the waitress, wife of the innkeeper, of a delicacy and beauty, with two big blue eyes from the movies, always attentive and smiling, and the other (but why do I never ask their names?) lover of dogs, with a good and very sweet expression in an ancient porcelain face, when he comes to clear the table and we guiltily admit that we couldn't finish the extraordinary baked potatoes in chunks and the zero-mile salad, he smiles, he understands that we are not lazy or disrespectful, but just beginners, and then asks us if we want the doggy bag. We head towards the exit, with our precious package under our arms, our Jack observes every single cm of the Ostarie with his bib, and then the innkeeper and his wife, who also love dogs, give him some real delicacies so much so that I seem to see a tear of pleasure in the greedy and now conquered Jack. The innkeeper tells us that in case he gets lost, Jack will be able to find his way back to the Ostarie: well, I can assure you that we too would be able to find our way back to the Ostarie, because you have spoiled us and enchanted us from the first glance and the first bite. ps Jack had the best breakfast of his life the next morning! Tuscany? No, Friuli. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
