We had a similar experience as Sarah Jia when we had dinner at Kartika. Food was average as we have had more authentic and much better Indonesian food at other restaurants. The focus of this review is to highlight the rudeness of the waiter. When my daughter drank tap water from her water bottle in the midst of ordering; the waiter snapped and told her sternly that no outside drinks were allowed in this establishment. He then gestured aggressively and told her to remove her water bottle from the table. I then request for tap water (paid of course) but he said there is no tap water; only still and sparkling water available which we were unwilling to pay for. We decided not to make a fuss then as it was late and we were hungry. Patronising Kartika is NOT recommended when customers are not treated with basic courtesy and respect. Kartika was the worst dining experience during our stay in Amsterdam. However, I would strongly recommend reading Kartika’s rude, disrespectful and crass responses when customers provide well meaning and useful feedback. Their attitude and personal attacks reflect poor upbringing and perhaps a challenging childhood. Though still not too late to learn basic courtesy, manners and respectfulness. It applies to everyone. When your daughter drank from an outside water bottle at the table, our waiter did exactly what he is paid to do: enforce the rule. That’s called doing his job, not being rude. You also mentioned knowing much better and more authentic Indonesian food—yet still decided to eat with us. We appreciate the visit, but interesting logic. Now, about the water—because this part needs correcting. We absolutely do have still water. In fact, we have plenty of it—enough to keep this restaurant running and probably hydrate the entire neighboring block as well. Saying we “only offer sparkling water” is simply nonsense. And Wanting to pay for tap water but refusing to pay for filtered, purified mineral water—water that is cleaner and safer—doesn’t quite add up. ‍‍‍If the comment about a “poor & challenging childhood” is indeed true. That very background is exactly where our food comes from.Growing up with limited means taught us flavors, techniques, and traditions that cannot be learned from luxury or textbooks. Our authentic taste is shaped by real experiences in our village, families, and our past. Had we been raised in comfort and good fortune, chances are we would know far less about the roots of traditional Indonesian food.So thank you for pointing it out—what was meant as an insult is actually the foundation of our cooking. We would also like to sincerely thank Ms. Sarah and we hope she will start using her glasses. Since she shared her experience, our restaurant has become noticeably busier. Unfortunately, the timing coincided with a period when we were short on staff.'Familiarity is not a free pass.Assuming rules don’t apply because you feel culturally close to us is exactly where the problem begins.'Happy sucker free Sunday!
