We visited during lunchtime today (Feb 3rd around 1pm) and ordered the Spicy Garlic Ramen and the Golden Sesame Ramen. While eating the garlic ramen, I found a foreign object in the dish. It was extremely hard. At first, I thought it was a bone, but it was not. I informed our server, but instead of taking the situation seriously, she laughed and casually said it was just a string used to tie the chashu pork, then walked away. She later returned and asked if I wanted two extra pieces of meat as compensation, which I declined. While I appreciate an energetic and cheerful server, there are moments when an apology and a sincere, professional attitude are absolutely necessary. This was clearly one of those moments. I did not leave a tip, and there were several reasons for this. When mayonnaise did not come with the karaage, I asked for it. At that time, the table had plenty of empty space, yet she placed the mayonnaise directly on top of my husband’s cellphone. Additionally, when we tried to get her attention by calling her, she showed no response. At that point, I felt that her service no longer deserved a tip. What made the situation even worse was her reaction after realizing we did not tip. She audibly scoffed, showed clear displeasure, and did not even say goodbye. I have lived in Canada for over 10 years and understand and respect tipping culture more than most. In all my years here, whenever a foreign object was found in food at other restaurants, I have never experienced such poor handling of the situation—and I have always left a tip. Mistakes can happen, but how those mistakes are handled makes all the difference. This was, without question, the worst response I have ever experienced. If this server wants to continue working in Canada, she needs to reflect on what she lacks and what needs to be improved when she does not receive a tip. And more importantly, the restaurant itself should seriously reconsider what kind of compensation and action should be taken when a foreign object is found in a customer’s food. Under no circumstances should a customer be expected to pay for and continue eating food that contains a foreign object. There is absolutely no justification for that.
