For over 20 years, we've drove past the Honeyrock Motel on Beyers Naude - in Honeydew (directly opposite the Eskort factory shop).
For over 20 years, various people have raved over the Portuguese food in this motel (even my stylist Roxy Infinity Hair & Nail Salon - who stayed in the South!)
For over 20 years, we've ignored all those people.
Until the weekend we stayed in the littlelest town, Val Hotel. Saturday evening, Hein Pretorius made a fire outside the hotel (dankie Rita Engelbrecht Britz en Vadi dat Hein kon vuurmaak) ... one of the guests, Martin joined us with his beer. Martin used to stay near Honeydew and again, RAVED over the Portuguese food at the Honeyrock Motel. Hein and I decided ... this is it.
We stopped at the Honeyrock Motel. The restaurant is HUGE! There's a big outside area with picnic tablesets, a pub area (smoking) with a TV, a big non-smoke area as well as a big non-smoke and with a TV area.
As Hein ordered the real Mozambique beer, 2M, (Mac-Mahon 2M is a clean, easy drinking lager with fruity notes and an approachable bitterness. 2M has been crowned Grand Champion 2015 at the African Beer Awards Maputo, Mozambique, the hometown of 2M, which was named after the Mac Mahon brewery where the beer was first crafted), we realised the Springbok - All Blacks rugby game was about to start.
As usual, I wanted the real experience ... so I ordered Milho Frito and Chicken Rissoles. Hein ordered steak, egg & chips. The waiter dropped my 2 plates ... but I was confused ... when I saw the Milho Frito on the menu, Hein Googled it. But the waiter gave me steamed vegetables. When I asked him, he realized the mistake.
What is Milho Frito? Milho frito is a typical Madeira side dish made of cornmeal, finely sliced collard greens, water, garlic, lard and olive oil cooked slowly and cooled into forms. Similar to a very firm polenta, it is cut into cubes and fried.
Wow - the cubes were nearly as big as the pepper pot! Smooth and crispy on the outside - absolutely delicious! And the rissoles ... delicious! The sauce on Hein's plate looked a bit grey, but he said it was delicious! Chips - yummy.
Lots of people at the tables ... good beer, fab Portuguese food ... do go and visit!!!!
