The absolute worst meal I've had in a long time. Not to toot my own horn but I cook great Korean food at home but I was just feeling too lazy to cook and I was craving Korean BBQ, preferably where I could grill my food at a table and eat with lettuce wraps. We wanted to try somewhere new - I think Nou Eul Tor is one of the few Korean restaurants that lets you grill meat at the table and eat the meat with lettuce, and Kiwa offers a bossam special where you can wrap meat in lettuce. Grilling establishments exist like Igi (expensive) and Idol (meh).

Hiroba was on our to-try list so we thought we could give it a shot. The menu looked decent, it had appetizing looking food based on the pictures and Hiroba has glowing reviews on Urbanspoon and on Winnipeg Free Press.

Before I go into my review I would just like to say my experience at Hiroba was one of the worst I've ever had and I would never dine here again. The food is gross and I can't believe they charge that much for such little food! It's robbery. For what we paid for -- $40 with taxes -- we got piddly amounts of food and it seriously costs $10 tops to make the dish we ordered and feed four people. Just so you know it was only me and my fiance that day. This is what I get for being lazy to cook. Anyway, back to the review.

We go to the restaurant. It's completely empty. The sushi chef was texting or playing on his cellphone, whatever. The owner greets us and seats us at our table. We look through the menu and decide that we want to order the spicy pork bbq special because there was no samgyeopsal (our favourite) so that was the next best thing.

So, the food. Our order came with 2 small bowls of rice, 2 miso soups, and 2 side dishes. Let me just say that the side dishes were total crap - potatoes were undercooked and the kimchi was the worst I've ever had, and trust I've had some awful kimchi in my lifetime. The spicy pork, which we have to grill ourselves (which is what we wanted) was more spicy vegetables than pork. There was hardly any pork in our dish. It was awful! They put too much pepper paste and sugar that there's barely any spice, just sweetness. Yuck. Our grill never heated up to get that nice char/sear to the meat, it was just a gloopy mess.

The service was crap. The people I dine with typically do not care for service, we see it as an add on rather than a requirement. As long as they come to our table when asked or they fill our water up occasionally we are good with that. We prefer servers who don't go to our table, ask us how our meal is all while there is food in our mouths. -_- But this was bad even for us. The owner avoided us and gave us no service even though NO ONE WAS AT THE RESTAURANT. When he did give "service" he would try to grill our food for us -- which defeats the purpose of Korean BBQ at a tabletop grill because the experience is US cooking the food, not the chef. If we wanted some guy to cook our food for us we would have ordered a la carte at a Korean restaurant elsewhere. It was really annoying because he was in between me and my fiance so we couldn't even have a proper conversation without this middle aged big man in the way. He would come in unannounced too, randomly grabbing our tongs from the table and flipping the meat himself.

Oh, and when I asked (when the food arrived) where the lettuce was for wrapping the meat, because it was in the pictures (and it is a standard in most places that are actually reputable), he gives me a smug look and smug tone of voice and says, "It's just a picture" and walks away.

And to add onto the ridiculousness of this poor excuse of a restaurant, a young couple came in and asked if they could eat for sushi. The owner turned them away and said there was no sushi here. Even though it is a KOREAN AND SUSHI/"JAPANESE" restaurant clearly advertised. What the hell is your "sushi chef" doing behind the counter then?

This place was not worth the $40. The service was crap, the food was crap, and this restaurant is a joke. No wonder no one eats here.
