STAY AWAY!!!
My friend and I went for dinner last night (September 22, 2016) and near the end of our dinner we found a tiny cockroach crawling around our plate. We immediately called the waitress
She took the plate to the back and came back saying "my boss said he can make u a new one". I told refused her offer and told her to tell her boss that we were not going to pay and that I would further notify the Health/Food Safety board. they still made us pay.
Hanabi Sushi can be seen as the epitome of Toronto's mid tier sushi places.
The tell tale signs are there: a menu littered with Korean dishes and token "teriyaki" options, non Japanese staff/owners and mediocre sushi at decent prices.
The food here is decidedly average, seen in the thicker than normal tempura batter, the overcooked teriyakis and the barely edible gyoza.
Don't get me wrong the food quality is not from a lack of trying. Even I can appreciate the surprisingly good plating of the sushi/sashimi platters. But there is simply a lack of execution, quality ingredients and consistency that good sushi requires.
Hanabi is a great restaurant to go with family, especially those with small children and less food discerning adults. But for foodies looking for their sushi fix this is one place in the GTA you can skip.
