Had dinner here and not at all impressed. The food wasn't bad but the service was horrible with inattentive waitresses that obviously don't depend on repeat customers. This place wouldn't last a month on the west coast. The salad ok, basil pasta was worse than average so thankfully the tuna was better. Of course it was in the menu with truffles which didn't exist but it was better than average to say the least. Too bad the servers ruined the meal with sub par service and rudeness. I'd you stay in Volastra I'd sure recommend to eat in another town. Any sidewalk cafe would offer better service.

So imagine I'm a millionaire...no billionaire. I go to to some restaurants in Ohio or the U.S where the proprieters choose food from a list that Sysco or Gordon Food service shows them, poorly prepare it in someway and charge a price that suggests they deserve a michelin star or 3. Imagine after this typical disheartening experience I keep having that I ask to speak to the owners, and I say "your food was so good, I want to fly you to Italy and give you some gift certificates to some places." Imagine that they go..and they eat at places like this and at their first bite of food it hits them: SHAME! They think "how shameful has it been for me to serve people with so little quality control or care. I didn't know food should taste this good." Imagine that they get the bill and its actually less than what they charge for their frozen all-I-had-to-do-was-cook-it-in-a-fryer-but-we-screwed-that-up-because-we-are-busy-and-our-fryer-oil-is-cooler-than-it-should-be-because-we-are-overloading-them-so-the-food-absorbs-a-ton-of-oil-and-is-soaked-in-grease food. Imagine that they come back and they decide that they are going to have an intimate connection with the food they sell and are going to take an honest look at things. They would tell their patrons that Gli Ulivi was the hidden gem of the cinque terre and that such a little place took such great care in creating the tuna with garlic and truffle oil on top. Or the seafood misto was the greatest small collection of seafood dishes ever compiled. The gist: All my negativity surrounding some of the places we go in Ohio was completely justified, because the unicorn (you know the phenomenal food at a great price with people that care) travels in herds in Italy and is summed up in this place. Not only is it possible, it sheds light on how downright shameful most American restaurants have become. I'm completely open minded when I walk in anywhere, in fact I want to like alot of places but seriously. This is one of our favorite restaurants on earth.
