Not Cape Town - but in that city with the name I still cannot remember or pronounce previously known as Port Elizabeth. Experiencing some mixed emotions - the excitement of new explorations but also some serious overwhelm by the lack of upkeep in the streets (oh how we suddenly appreciated the blue rule of Cape Town!), we decided to venture into the safety of the Boardwalk Mall. Where we were immediately lured into little Japan by a giant cup of Boba Tea. Just as background - my anime besotted niece who believes she was Korean in a previous life, and I have been planning an imaginary trip to Japan this year (most probably not going to happen as she is writing matric and I run a realistic budget). So discovering Foo Jiu Sushi Restaurant was seen as an sign of this imaginary trip just becoming true. Although a small, beautifully decorated restaurant with a stunning koi fish mural (I am also a huge Michael Heyns koi art fan), it boasts a large menu with amazing dishes. Not wanting to spoil her absolute joy, I agreed to drink my first Matcha Boba Tea. The interesting green colour made it feel a bit more healthier than it probably is, but the tapioka took me straight back to my mom's custard sago Sunday dessert. I am now hooked! As we are saving for our imaginary trip ro Japan, the obvious course of action (only one course!) was the special of the day. Actual two choices - either two selected hot dishes plus fried rice for R160 or two 16 piece sushi platters for R198. The hot dishes sounded very tempting, especially rhe orange glazed chicken (which nearly ripped me out of pescetarianism), but in the end we opted for the sushi special. What can I say - Mount Fuji erupted! The plates arrived is smoke through which some beautifully crafted sushi was revealed! (The last time I saw such spectacular dry ice was when served a cocktail at the V&A that cost more than this meal! So the special was paying off just in presentation!) What can I say - the food was great. The decor just beautiful and tomorrow it will be our last stop before we leave for the airport! And who knows - Japan might be a bit closer than we think!
