I have mixed feelings about this place. Potentially it's a grand idea "pay what you can for food" and "selling fresh food at discount because it's not pretty". Awesome ideas. And they have free food out in front. The biggest issue though is that most of the packaged food inside, that you have to pay for, is expired. Like others said - this is a health hazard and belittles folks who are having financial issues. Don't believe people when they tell you "food doesn't expire" or that you can, say, drink milk 2 weeks after expiry. It's simply not true. So is it a business or charity/philanthropy? I don't feel like you can make a business out of expired food. It's frankly offensive. All expired food packaged should be free. (Fresh food is different because you know exactly what you are getting - you can see it and smell it and cut away the bad parts. I don't even have a problem with selling packaged food for a huge discount that is expiring soon.) Keep in mind that Feed it Forward is not the only place that sells expired food. A lot of health food stores also do this. It's not right no matter what the context.

Dear Anna, We deeply appreciate your thoughtful review of Feed it Forward. Your recognition of our commitment to providing affordable and accessible food options, coupled with the "pay what you can" concept and discounted fresh produce, reflects our ongoing efforts to make a positive impact. Your concerns about packaged food reaching its expiration date are valid, and we take them seriously. We understand the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. We are currently reviewing our policies to address this issue and enhance our commitment to providing quality products. At Feed it Forward, we operate with a unique model aimed at reducing food waste and environmental impact. Without the "pay what you can" approach, a considerable amount of this food, which may not meet conventional aesthetic standards but is still safe and nutritious, would end up in landfills. This practice aligns with our mission to provide access to healthy food options, even those with minor blemishes, for individuals who might otherwise not have the opportunity. Your input is invaluable as we continuously strive to improve our services. We appreciate your engagement in this conversation and are committed to finding innovative solutions that balance our environmental goals with the health and well-being of our community. Thank you for being part of our journey. Best regards, Chef Jagger Gordon Feed it Forward Team
