Our local company host had made a reservation for 40 of us to enjoy an authentic Italian dinner at the Ristorante Cavallino Rosso in Berlin recently. We occupied most of the right hand side of the restaurant when you walk in the front door.
Things started well with a choice of Prosecco (white or rose) and red (!) apple juice. The Italian owner/manager was a larger than life figure who really got the party going. Finally he had us all take our seats as he then proceeded to explain the choices of the specially selected menu in a mixture of faltering English, German, Italian and, curiously, Spanish. All good fun!
For the starter we all enjoyed picking from large platters of mixed antipasti which was all delicious. For the main course we had a choice between entrecote of veal or codfish fillet on a bed of apple lentils. I went for the latter and enjoyed a large piece of pure white cod. For dessert we were offered something called "cavallino rosso". To be honest I forget what it was...
We washed this down with a choice of both white and red wines as to be expected (names not recorded). Both were great accompaniments to the meal.
And finally, as the evening wore on and the talking continued we settled down to after dinner coffees, beer and liquors.
All in all this was a superb evening in authentic Italian style. The staff were highly efficient in keeping us all well fed and watered. And the larger than life local "mein Host" kept up the good spirits with friendly banter and he always a bottle in hand to top up any empty glasses.
