The friendly greeting by Cyril and his team on arrival told us all we needed to know about Cafés Ubuntu, which is situated a stone’s throw away from the beautiful canopy-covered Lèige railway station. We were there at lunchtime and the chef was bringing out a tray of freshly baked cinnamon whirls to the front desk, a wonderful sensory experience and we knew these would have to be our takeaway as we had a train to catch afterwards. The menu has something for all dietary requirements and all the produce is grown or caught locally i.e. the delicate trout and the flour is freshly milled for the delicious artisan bread. We would recommend everything on the menu had we had all day/all week to sample the delights but we settled on an intriguing dish “oeufs mimosa” with “gravalax truite ou fumée”. This was served with a couple of slices of freshly baked artisan bread and warm beverages stylishly created by Cyril. The best way of describing this dish is like eaten a fluffy cloud of eggs, herbs and some secret ingredients that simply elevated the dish beyond anything you are likely to find in a Michelin star café at a fraction of the price and with extra helpings of charming conversation from Cyril our host. Suitably refreshed beyond expectations we continued our journey, sad to leave but with two still piping hot cinnamon whirls to see us through the next leg of our travels. To any person, backpackers, commuters, families holidaying, simply anyone passing near Lèige Station please call in to Cafés Ubuntu and you will be transported away from the everyday by their delicious, home grown and cooked to order menu and charming hospitality. Thank you to Cyril and the talented team for creating a sumptuous and special memory for us as we travelled through Europe.
