Today I began my exploration of the Maguire neighbourhood by having dinner at Brynd Smoked Meat. I went passed it twice before I realized that it was not at street level, but upstairs over a clothing store. When I arrived at the second floor, I saw a nice-sized dining room and bar, with seating for about 70. Exposed ceiling timbers and bare wooden columns, matching colour wood floors, black and tan chairs and tables. There weren’t that many diners at 6:30 on a Sunday, but there was some inclement snow and ice outside that may have kept some people home.
I was going to order the Brynd Platter, which came with Caesar Salad, but was told it was not available due to the current romaine lettuce issue. Instead I went with the Athens Platter, which came with a Greek Salad and a pickle. I picked the large size platter at $21.50. I should have asked what large meant. When it arrived, it must have had more than 10 oz of smoked meat. It was piled more than 2 inches high, the meat was smoky, moist, tender, filled with flavour, and almost melted in my mouth. I had to eat some of the sandwich with a fork, because I simply could not pick up all that meat between two slices of rye. The pickle was a really good dill. The salad was mostly tomato, with a few olives and red onions, and a couple of chunks of firm goat cheese, dressed with a seasoned oil and vinegar dressing.
This was one of the best smoked meat sandwiches that I have ever had.
