While the atmosphere is pretty nice and the service is pretty efficient, in the end the restaurants attempts at trying to be fancy falls short. The food was good but lacked any real depth to make it special. The chocolate cake as well was bland, dry, and overall just felt like it was some cheap minute-made garbage, I regret every moment of biting into that. Alongside this, for the overall price of each dish, I would expect a bit more. 273 dollars for four people with 2 apps, 4 mains, and 2 desserts is roadside robbery. won’t be back. Ordered the December Vegan Taste of Berkeley in addition to some small plates. Cocktails (tried four of their signatures) and cheese on sourdough along with the BN salad were excellent. Everything else was inconsistent. One bite of the cauliflower was fantastic, the next had an absurd amount of salt. The gnocchi was a bit overcooked and bland. The chana rolls had a fantastic sauce, but were also a little overcooked/hard. The gluten free/vegan chocolate cake included was incredibly dry and hardly edible. The above would probably have been a 2-3 star experience for the price. I rate one star because the server made a mistake, then when she went to fix the mistake, the manager on duty would not allow her to do so. I ordered the 'vegan Taste of Berkeley', the server asked 'the December one?', and I said 'yes, the vegan December Taste of Berkeley'. Instead of dishes from the vegan prix fixe, the server started by bringing out mushroom dumplings and sourdough with cheese from the standard prix fixe. I immediately informed her that she had made an error as she put the dishes down. She said that she would take it off of the bill and correct the order. The manager would not let her take off the two dishes that she had already brought out, and the server made no further attempt to correct the bill. Ultimately I was charged for two dishes that I had not ordered. For reference, the tasting menus online are called 'December Taste of BN Menu', 'December Gluten Free Menu', and 'December Vegan Menu' under a 'December Taste of BN Tasting Menus' header. In restaurant, they are labelled 'December Taste of Berkeley North', 'Taste of Berkeley North GF', and 'Taste of Berkeley North Vegan'. The in-restaurant menu only labels the standard prix fixe as 'December', so I understand where the confusion came from, but I specified the vegan tasting menu at least two, and possibly three times. The server should have understood what I meant, and when she did not, the restaurant should have taken the dishes I did not order off the bill. Completely soured my experience.
