Today, December 11, 2024: I go down to get my shiny new tobacco just before lunch and immediately after studying. Gripped by midday hunger, I decide to treat myself to a Beatrice sandwich (2.5 euros). The day is shining and the corner of Piazza Carducci is touched by this beautiful light that stretches from Via Nizza to Porta Nuova. I enter and notice that the usual crowd isn't there and most of the employees are talking and not busy. I take my cooked and capricious sandwich and put myself in the strangely empty box. The one who never smiles is missing, which I have seen planted there a thousand times with the same expression. A friend now. But I pass by and wait to pay. After a while, one of the waiters who usually serves coffee appears in front of me. He doesn't say anything, so I point to the sandwich and say "this". He writes 4.00 on the keyboard of the POS and says "it's 4 euros". I look at him amazed and say "ah... But I'll just take the sandwich... wasn't it €2.50?" He looks at me and says "look, we've changed management, I'm usually not even here at the register. A company bought the business but we workers (waiters and pastry chefs) remain the same apart from a few changes". I reluctantly pay these 4 euros, but from my face I can understand the sense of strangeness that envelops me. He takes the moment to open up to me, perhaps because the evil forces of capital have won and he feels like apologizing. Maybe he himself feels somehow responsible for this mess and wants to distance himself. Screaming "Hey you, man, I'm a man like you, I understand your disappointment.. but the capital machine is an infallible warlord. We in Beatrice are also the fallen of this war, like you." But no, he says to me with the face of a person who is about to reveal an uncomfortable truth that no one expects: "can I make my own personal criticism of all this?" I nod my head in the affirmative, I think "yes brother, comrade, express yourself. Bring out your blade for yet another blow into the void towards this sick system". He stands proud from the permission given to him by me and by the very rich lady behind me, who is also intrigued by this wave of change. "I think that before the prices... They were too low. This is a serious company, they came and split hairs. Now the prices.." he doesn't finish the sentence and I interrupt him "of course the products are excellent, this one from Beatrice was a nice exception. I've been a fan of these sandwiches for years now... Except that I'm a student.." He looks at me and says with the same calm face as when he served you coffee ".. yes of course, perhaps for students and soldiers the prices are a bit high.." I am shocked, the lady behind me agrees with him and approaches to pay for her 35 euro tray of pastries. I go out while they talk about this and that. The light beats behind me now. I feel like something is wrong, but I have to move forward. If I looked back now I would be blinded by that sun that had attracted me before. "Looking at the past you might stay blinded" Perhaps this is the last dessert Beatrice served me. A bitter phrase but one that ultimately makes you look forward. Thanks Beatrice, I usually don't like goodbyes. But now, in front of the front door, with the sun beating down on the left side of my face, I look at that corner with Piazza Carducci. It had never seemed so far away. I didn't know when it would become passé. Thanks Beatrice It was nice. Goodbye Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1

Quite simply, she is no longer Beatrice. Now it costs too much and has lost the family and open atmosphere that characterized this bar/pastry shop. In short, the new management is looking for richer customers. Another institution that falls to guarantee the profit of "Torino Society", leaving a big void in this neighborhood.
