Slow service with expensive and bland food, read on to know more.My family and I have frequented Filipino restaurants in many cities across Europe and the US and Bahay Kubo was by far the most expensive and worst tasting that we have experienced. First, it is in a very small place so it's best to get a reservation. We booked one online but when we arrived we were told that we should have called because they don't check the online reservation requests if they are made during the two hour window before they open. An understandable policy since they have to get ready to serve dinner but nothing of this was mentioned on their website. When we visited, there were only two people working: the cook in the back and the waitress/second cook. Service was extremely slow and we waited nearly an hour to get our main dishes. The menu was also way too big for such a small staff. The multi-page menu had a wide variety of Filipino food but makes for a long wait if you decide to be the only one to order fried pork belly when everyone else orders chicken. Having a shorter menu will increase the quality of the items and make waiting times shorter. The food was also way too expensive. The cost is nearly twice as much as the other Filipino restaurants we have been to. Most dishes run between 15-20 euros. The lumpia, a standard Filipino side dish or appetizer, costs 10 euro and you get four rolls with each cut in half. The sisig, a sizzling dish made from pig head and liver, cost 17 euros which is outrageous. 17 euros is roughly 1,000 Philippine Pesos and for that amount you could easily pay for a whole meal for four people in the Philippines. Finally, on to the food. The previous problems could have been overlooked if the food was good but instead it was very bland and average. The sisig was decent but mine was supposed to be mild and was actually quite spicy. It was also brought out while it was still madly sizzling and even the waitress was assaulted with jumping bits of hot oil and water. As it was laid down in front of me I had to move back a few inches to avoid the sizzling inferno. The pork sinigang (soup) was also very bland and both dishes required copious amounts of soy sauce to increase the taste. The lumpia, quite possibly the national dish of the Philippines, was not crispy at all and quite chewy. With each dish came one serving of rice and we were charged for extra rice, which is completely ridiculous considering how much rice Filipinos eat. This is the only Filipino restaurant that I have been to that has done this and is an insult to their customers. The service was slow but the waitress was nice. The restaurant itself was nicely decorated and probably one of the nicer looking Filipino eateries that I have been to. Despite this, the slow service, underwhelming food, and high prices make this a place that I cannot recommend.
