Very nice restaurant, with local dishes. We had dinner there twice precisely because after the first evening we wanted to do an encore. The dishes are all delicious but the true excellence of the place are the three guys who manage the room: Nicole, Michael and Matteo. Kind, friendly and polite, truly a pleasure for the customer. So we were wandering Ferrara streets on a Friday night, as we sometimes are, looking to eat; we’d looked at menus on a couple of favourites, not inspiring, tried a couple more, didn’t fancy the seating options, and of course there were a couple we’d been to not long ago: but then my dearly beloved she said “Antica Osteria delle Volte has never let us down”, and, you know what, she was right [OK this often happens, no point in denying it] - and I was left wondering why we didn’t think of it earlier. Antica Osteria does (a) Ferrarese classics to a high standard [the Coppia Ferrarese bread was fresh and light, and we all know that’s not always the case], (b) traditional with a twist, like for when you’re introducing someone to cappellacci di zucca but you fancy going a little further yourself, (c) creative cooking with seasonal and exploratory ingredients. What we went for was in this category: soft-textured gnocchi with formaggio di fossa and truffle, a black semi-fermented pasta whose name I forget, with pecorino cream, and it was cooked to perfection. One more time we were unsure about where to go, and Antica Osteria did right by us. Again. Visitors: you might expect something with this name in this street to be a tourist trap pure and simple, but you’d be very wrong. As far as I can see and say, this is one of my favourite restaurants in Ferrara, and deserves to be more highly rated than it is. Never lets us down Service: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: €30–40 Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4 Vegetarian options: I’m vegetarian and there were at least four primi, none of them obvious save the Cappellacci, and there is often a good spin on that too. 3 or 4 antipasti too.
