Staying in Palermo for the weekend we were looking forward to the food and cultural experiences we had read so much about before our trip. On arrival however we had a couple of disappointing experiences on the Saturday. In the afternoon we had street food in Ballaro Market but at the end of the day, around 4pm, the food was past its best. We had been in the morning and everything was much fresher and so we did a little sightseeing and went back later. Long story short if you want street food from here go early! Second disappointment was in the evening. Expecting a genuine Sicilian culinary delight we headed for the centre of the historic city, vibrant, like Ballaro Market in the morning, the city was full of life and energy. The restaurants all want to entice you in but once in the service was shambolic and the warmth they used to get you in disappeared instantly and it seemed they couldn't turn you round and get you out quick enough! To add to this the food was from a packet and the presentation and service was shocking! Conclusion, if you want a genuine Sicilian experience, avoid busy streets full of restaurants and people. On the Sunday, our final day before heading to the coast, our expectations of finding that experience had all but disappeared. As we were staying in an apartment directly overlooking Piazza San Domenico, we decided to head to the restaurant directly under our noses...'A Tabula è Cunzata'...regarding the "genuine Sicilian experience" this turned out to be the best decision we made all weekend!Claudio!...I will start with his name, all I can say is thank you! He turned our experience around and made our final day a delight, restoring our faith in the pursuit and delivery of that experience.A Tabula è Cunzata! This is a must visit for people who want to relax and enjoy Palermo for its real beauty, the food, the people and the historic architecture. Situated directly in Piazza San Domenico this place offers views of the old chiesa San Domenico, with people leaving the church after Sunday Mass, local kids playing football, vespas and Fiat 500s scooting by, pedestrians strolling and enjoying a chat sat on the marble benches; all of Palermo in one place!Claudio and his colleague welcomed us, sat us down outside, spoke perfect English, as my Italian isn't great, ran patiently through the menu and made us feel welcome and relaxed. When our food came, we were not disappointed either. My partner ordered the mussel soup and me a local dish with fried cheese and potato and we shared a pizza for the main course; along with fresh Sicilian orange juice and the obligatory bottle of water and finished off with an espresso. All of this with the amazing views and an outstanding personal service. Not once did we feel rushed, allowing us to take in the full experience. This place is not overly fancy but ticked every box. The price of the meal was also very reasonable; around €40.After the meal we went for a long walk and returned later for Ice cream in the Gelateria next door ( appeared to be same estabishment), which was also beautiful. So a big THANK YOU to Claudio and A Tavula è Cunzata for turning our experience around and making our weekend in Palermo. Grazie Mille and hope to return again soon!
