Dinner is a must in the center of Bologna, at Ristorante Da Nello Al Montegrappa, located at Via Monte Grappa. While there, authenticity surrounded me, and good food followed. A robust waiter in an iconic vest and smile that set the stage for a great meal served our salad – not an ordinary lettuce salad, but a plate of mushrooms, zucchini and truffles sliced thin as paper on a mandolin and served with shaved Parmesan and EVOO on top. All I can say is WOW! The wine we drank is different than what I'd been sipping through Italy, beginning with a dark, purple Grasparossa, a Lambrusca variety. It is effervescent, and definitely a table wine quite unique and indigenous to this area. I learn that the lambrusco grape is the grape used in Riunite wines, the only lambrusca sold in the U.S. It’s an obscure grape to me.We are in Emilia-Romagna, and that’s what you drink here. We also enjoyed the authentic rose with effervescence by Cleto Chiarli of Vecchia Modena. It goes well with the best Bolognese lasagna I’ve ever had the pleasure to taste. The pasta is homemade with spinach, so it is green, and has béchamel sauce, nutmeg, ragu (the Bolognese) and is served with a side of mushroom risotto. I felt like I was in heaven -- full, but willing to at least take a few bites of cotolata bologna veal with Parma ham and fresh pecorino cheese. And then I indulged in dessert of Charlotte (ice-box cake in America) that is drizzled with chocolate sauce. How could I resist?
