I go in for breakfast, at the counter I ask if there are any vegan croissants. The sales assistant tells me no. No problem for me, it happens. His colleague intervenes and begins an interrogation to understand why he asks for "vegan". I reply that I can't eat dairy products. At this point he gives me an (unsolicited) lesson on the fact that I shouldn't say "vegan" but "dairy-free" and details why, underlining that it's the third time in one morning that he has to explain it. What escapes the arrogant clerk is that in any other place, if I don't ask for a vegan one, I risk being given a wholemeal one with butter. Another thing he doesn't know is that it is difficult to find croissants without dairy products but with eggs. Generally the distinction is clear. Being told by a kid, on a Sunday morning, that "there isn't enough culture about it" is not the way I think I should be welcomed in a business. Teach your staff to deal with the public.
