Before getting groceries for my friend at Checkers on ground floor, I get a coffee from Bootlegger on the 2nd floor. I order my usual and the Bavuyise Sahodimo doesn’t ask for my loyalty so I ask him to please scan it. I’ve got headphones on but no music playing. The guy making the coffee asks him in Xhosa, “Who does this coffee belong to?” He points to me and says, “Yeyale nkazana.” In a formal context, the word is an insult. You do not refer to anyone as inkazana. Even formally, the word doesn’t apply to me. He went ahead and said, “But are you not a girl?” This boy stood by what he was saying knowing full well that he had offended me. You don’t under any circumstance refer to anyone as inkazana bc it is disgustingly rude. Service: 1

In general I love the Bootlegger Coffee Company restaurants, in fact I’ve often popped into the branch at the Cape Quarter, but this was my first time at the Point mall restaurant. Super frustrating service- we seated ourselves in a mostly empty restaurant yet none of the staff bothered to bring us menus. After flagging someone down menus were brought to us, but I’m not sure if our waitress was training or simply just did not care. She took our order and then walked away only after several minutes had passed did she return to ask how we wanted our eggs done and then she actually placed the order. Our coffee order took so long and on top of that it sat at the counter getting cold before someone served it to us. The food took ages, but was delicious and at least made up for the horrible experience. Honestly I’d never return here, there are far better run establishments within walking distance of the mall.
